A Q&A WITH NANCY BILYEAU
1. What inspired you to write The Versailles Formula?
I wanted Genevieve to be tested as never before, to go on an important mission but this time for the British. And I wanted to dig deep into what it would feel like to risk one’s life: the fear, the personal sacrifices, but also the thrill.
2. How would you describe The Versailles Formula in three words?
Immersive . . . exciting . . . escapist.
3. If you could have anyone play the The Versailles Formula main characters in a movie who would you choose?
I love pop culture — I used to be an editor at Entertainment Weekly — so I have given serious thought to this! For Genevieve Sturbridge, I would cast Olivia Cooke (House of Dragons); for Thomas Sturbridge, Tom Hiddleston (Crimson Peak): for Captain Howard, Rupert Friend (Homeland); and for Vicomte Antoine-Jean de Breteuil, Ben Whishaw (Black Doves)
4. Which out of the series did you have the most fun writing?
Definitely this one. I most loved writing scenes of Genevieve’s fear at Strawberry Hill, her adventures in Paris and the scenes when Genevieve battled with Captain Howard, her partner in spying. They are both such strong personalities: intelligent and stubborn!
5. How will you celebrate the publication day of The Versailles Formula?
Oh, dinner with my husband and kids at a French bistro I adore. Both my main character, Genevieve, and I worship French cuisine. And this restaurant is fun: Its walls are covered with photos of vintage Citroëns.
