Q&A WITH KIERSTEN MODGLIN
All your books are suspense novels — which writers would you say influence and inspire you the most?
Some of the authors that inspire me are Jodi Picoult, Gillian Flynn, Louise Candlish, B.A. Paris, Catherine Steadman and Darcey Bell!
You’ve published over thirty standalone novels — was The Arrangement originally supposed to be a standalone or did you always know it was going to be trilogy?
I much prefer to write standalone stories. I love bringing my readers into new worlds where they don’t know who to trust. When I wrote The Arrangement, it was meant to be a standalone like most of my others. That story quickly took on a life of its own, though, and when readers asked for more, I realized we weren’t quite done with Peter and Ainsley Greenberg just yet.
What is the most interesting/unique thing you've had to research for a book?
Oh, I’ve researched some very strange and dark things. Maybe the most interesting was the research I did for my novel, The Missing, which is about a group of strangers who are left on a deserted island. I had to do a lot of research on how to survive without supplies, how to boil water without anything to put it in, how to tell what plants were edible and which were poisonous, etc. It was a lot of fun and probably the book I’ve done the most research for so far!
Who would you cast to play Peter and Ainsley from The Arrangement trilogy in a TV/movie adaptation?
I’d love to see Jason Bateman and Christina Hendricks as Peter and Ainsley! They would be so perfect.
What are you reading/watching at the moment?
I’m currently watching Ted Lasso (I know, I’m behind!) and reading Those People by Louise Candlish.
What has been your biggest career highlight so far?
Realizing I’d sold over a million copies of my novels! As an indie author, we often don’t know about the milestones we hit unless we’re actually sitting down and doing the math or watching the charts ourselves. A few years ago, I started updating my sales numbers monthly just to keep an eye on things (a million sales still seemed impossible at that point) and when I finally reached it, the milestone felt totally surreal. I rarely celebrate myself, but that day, I printed a poster to hang on my wall with the date and milestone listed. It’s still one of my favorite things in my office. For so long, this was all just a dream, but my readers have shown up for me over and over again. I’m so incredibly grateful to them for giving me that and so many other beautiful moments.
How can our readers reach you?
Great question! I’m everywhere and I love connecting with my readers!
