INDIE AUTHOR SPOTLIGHT: JD KIRK

This week we're absolutely thrilled to feature bestselling indie author JD Kirk!

JD Kirk is the pen name of multi-award-winning author, screenwriter, and writer of comics, Barry Hutchison. Born and raised in Fort William in the Highlands of Scotland, Barry/JD wanted to be a writer from the age of nine, when a kindly librarian wrote his name on the spine of a notebook in which he’d written a terrible short story, and put it on the shelf.

JD Kirk is the author of the bestselling DCI Jack Logan and Robert Hoon Thriller series, and has drawn praise from writers including L.J. Ross: “a breath of fresh air in the crime fiction genre.” and Adam Croft: “Gripping. Atmospheric. Chilling.

Q: Describe your latest book in three words.

A: Gripping. Scottish. Darkly-comedic. (Hyphenated words count as one, right?)

Q: What author, dead or alive, would you like to have dinner with?

A: Iain Banks. Years ago, he came to visit my high school, and when I told him I wanted to be an author he gave me a huge amount of encouragement. Years later, when my first children's book was published, I sat next to him at a signing table at a book festival. In every interaction I ever had with him, he just seemed like an amazing guy.

Q: What's the strangest thing you've had to research for a book?

A: Whether or not it's possible to decapitate someone with a spoon. (It is, but you have to be really determined.)

Q: Who would you want to play your main characters in a film/TV adaptation — any why?

A: I'm always hopeless at trying to imagine actors who'd be a fit for any of my characters, but a few readers have suggested Kevin McKidd as DCI Logan, and Graham McTavish as Bob Hoon, and now I can't imagine anyone else in the roles. So, those two, please.

Q: What are you currently reading and watching?

A: I'm watching Black Bird (the drama series on AppleTV+, not the terrible Michael 'Lord of the Dance' Flatley spy film), and reading We Are Where the Nightmares Go and Other Stories by C. Robert Cargill. I've got a bit of an obsession with short stories at the moment, and this collection is great, assuming you like demons and zombie dinosaurs. And who doesn't?
