AN INTERVIEW WITH JOY ELLIS
Without giving too much away, what can readers look forward to with Jackman and Evans in Black Notice?
Mmm, not easy . . . but let’s say they are presented with a case that rocks both Jackman
and especially, Marie. It makes them question both what human beings are capable of,
and ask themselves just how long can someone continue to work in that kind of
environment, without becoming totally desensitised, or crack up! So, as you actually
used the words ‘look forward to’, and that was a bit heavy . . . I’ll lighten it up and say . . .
Readers can discover a case that shocks even our intrepid detectives to the core! Plus,
on a lighter note, we have another thread that proves that the best laid plans can take a
turn that you were never expecting! Crime doesn’t always pay!
What first sparked the idea for Black Notice?
Two things really. One, when I had my florist’s shop, we occasionally did flowers for
some lovely people who lived in a pure Art Deco design house. It was gorgeous! I
was always blown away by it, and was delighted to see it in an episode of Poirot on
the TV. I was desperate to put it in one of my books; Art Deco and Art Nouveau being
particular favourites of mine. The other was seeing some statistics for missing
persons, and the scary figures promoted a bit of research into how Interpol issue
colour coded notices to share alerts and requests for information worldwide. Black
Notice refers to unidentified bodies. Need I say more?
You’ve written Jackman and Evans through so many twists and turns — how do you keep their partnership fresh and compelling?
On starting a new book in any of the series, I have a quick recap on exactly where I
left them last . . . and with the Jackman books, it’s via Richard Armitage’s wonderful
narrating on Audible. Then we have a kind of catch-up natter, like old friends do, and
once I understand where they are in their lives, we move on into the next adventure.
They are real people, aren’t they? If I don’t believe in them, I can hardly expect my
readers to, now can I?
And finally, what’s next on the horizon? We know readers are eager for your next book!
Next up? Well, after finding some old, (more like ancient) notes made over two
decades ago, when I’d been planning a third Ellie McEwan mystery . . . and after
listening to so many requests from lovely readers asking for a third book, I went for
it! We now have a trilogy! Yes, next up is another police investigation that goes the
paranormal route, because Ellie and her friends are involved! And after that, another
novella for Audible, and then, who knows? Nikki? Matt? Decisions, decisions!
