KATE LYALL GRANT'S FIRST ACQUISITIONS AT JOFFE ARE ANNOUNCED!

Since starting at Joffe Books in November 2021 Kate has acquired some brilliant new talent to join an already exceptional pool of authors.

Among them are a new police procedural series by Bafta-nominated screenwriter and author Mark Mills; the first three "hard-hitting thrillers" from a serving police superintendent writing as Adam Lyndon (pictured in the middle); and a heartbreaking debut from radio-host-turned-author C.J. Connolly (pictured right).

The trio is turned into a quartet with the acquisition of a “darkly twisting" thriller by Stephen Williams (pictured left).

I think it’s safe to say this year has started with a bang and an array of fireworks indeed!

CHRISTIE J. NEWPORT WINS THE FIRST JOFFE BOOKS PRIZE FOR CRIME WRITERS OF COLOUR!

The results are in and we’re absolutely delighted to announce the winner of the first-ever Joffe Books Prize for crime writers of colour: Christie J. Newport!

Although competition was fierce, the decision, made by literary agent Susan Yearwood, bestselling author Dorothy Koomson, Joffe Books editorial director Emma Grundy Haigh and publisher Jasper Joffe, was unanimous.

From the judges: “Christie has written an enormously promising, immediately immersive police procedural with a fantastically hooky opening scene followed by twist after twist. Detective Beth Fellows is the refreshing female lead, whose identity as a gay, mixed-race officer struggling to separate her professional and personal lives is wholly identifiable. This novel has excellent series potential, and we can see readers eagerly devouring the pages.”

From Christie J. Newport: “Receiving the phone call to tell me I had won was unbelievable. It was akin to winning the lottery. Dorothy Koomson is an inspiration, her enjoying my writing is incredible.”

Please join us in congratulating Christie for winning a two-book publishing deal with Joffe Books. Christie’s first book is set to be released in autumn 2022. Keep an eye out for this dazzling debut!

NEWEST JACKMAN AND EVANS ON TOP OF THE CHARTS

Christmas came early for Joffe Books this year, with Joy Ellis stealing the top spot in the charts last week with the latest addition to the bestselling Jackman and Evans series!

The Night Thief, a gripping thriller, sees Jackman and Evans hunting an unusual perpetrator, who only steals pictures of little children. That is until stealing isn’t enough anymore . . .

Not only has book eight in the Jackman and Evans series (or what we’re all calling the juggernaut of crime thrillers) dominated the charts, but book seven, The Patient Man, was also shortlisted in this year’s British Book Awards. If that doesn’t deserve a round of applause, I don’t know what will!

Faith Martin author image old.gif

Film and TV rights for Faith Martin’s DI Hillary Greene crime series have been optioned by LA-based Southwell Neal Entertainment (SNE).

Martin was represented in the deal by Kate Nash of the Kate Nash Literary Agency while SNE was represented by Darren Trattner from Jackoway Tyerman in LA.

The DI Hillary Greene series currently has 18 novels and has sold over two million copies. The series is a cold case homicide investigation centred on a “flinty, brilliant” detective living in Oxfordshire. The titles follow Greene as she is partnered for the first time with former LAPD detective John Sullivan.

SNE’s Becky Southwell and Dylan Neal plan to create a dramatic TV series in a co-production with the UK, along with the support of Play Media in Canada.

Neal commented: “We are thrilled that Faith has entrusted us with bringing Hillary to the TV screen and know that her millions of loyal readers will be joined by even more TV viewers. We believe that everyone will fall in love with this addictive procedural and the two complicated leads at its heart, just as Becky and I have.”

THE SILENT LISTENER HAS BEEN OPTIONED FOR SCREEN
Silent Listener cover ready for ARC.jpg

We’re delighted to announce The Silent Listener has been optioned for screen by Deanne Weir of WeirAnderson Films. Deanne Weir is a former media lawyer and executive turned producer, investor and company director.  She is passionate about storytelling, change-making and gender equality.

Deanne's company WeirAnderson.com invests in entrepreneurs and storytellers to help them change the world. Deanne is Chair of Ai-Media, an ASX listed global provider of speech to text services, and Seer Data & Analytics, a technology start-up helping the social sector make better decisions through the use of data and insights.

WeirAnderson.com has made direct investments in various Australian feature films, including I Used to Be NormalBabyTeethMiss Fisher & The Crypt of Tears and I Am Woman.  The newest projects, under the WeirAnderson Films banner with Deanne as Executive Producer, are Blaze, the feature film debut of artist, writer and director, Del Kathryn Barton with producer Sam Jennings of Causeway Films, and How To Please a Woman, from writer / director Renee Webster and producers Judi Levine and Tania Chambers.

A board member of Screen Australia for eight years until 2016, Deanne was instrumental in the development of its Gender Matters program and remains a member of its Gender Matters Taskforce. Deanne is also Chair of the Sydney Film Festival and For Film’s Sake, an advocacy organisation providing opportunity for all women in production, distribution and cultural exhibition.

Deanne on why she wants to bring The Silent Listener to the screen:

First and foremost, The Silent Listener is a cracking read, a complex multi-layered story that leaves the reader thinking well beyond the last page. Literary and film comparisons are The Dry by Jane Harper and Delia Owens’ Where the Crawdads Sing. Lyn Yeowart’s writing is similarly visual and cinematic, I can see the characters walking across the screen as I read. While much of the story is internal to Joy, there are many ways to show her internal world on screen, and to highlight the contrast between the harshness of her external world and the rich interior one that she creates for her own survival. As a genre piece, whether you call it a gothic psychological thriller, or a murder mystery with gothic themes, there is definitely a global market for well-made stories of this kind, and I believe this is an Australian story with significant international appeal. The book’s themes explore the ongoing impacts of violence and trauma, community hypocrisy, toxic masculinity and mental health issues. And by bringing the story to screen, we can make it accessible not just for those who have loved the book, but for a whole new audience who may then turn back to the book to go even deeper into Joy’s world. I can't wait to help bring Lyn Yeowart’s distinctive voice and compelling story to a broad screen audience.

The UK edition of The Silent Listener is available to pre-order here and will be released on Thursday 24 June 2021 – prepare to be hooked!

CRIME READERS LOCAL HISTORY WALKS MONTH

May is local history month, national walking month and national crime reading month, so the fantastic team at Bridgwater Library have set to work to create a wonderful display to combine the three. If you’re in the Somerset area, pop in and say hello to the friendly team and check out their selection of crime novels set locally, books on historic Somerset crime, and walks in the surrounding area.

Our very own David Hodges and his Sergeant Kate series are included in the local Crime Walks, where readers are invited to walk the locations of some of the murders in books by local crime writers, including David, and immerse themselves in their stories.

Thank you to everyone at Bridgwater Library for creating this immersive experience. If any of our readers participate in one of David’s Crime Walks, please get in touch at office@joffebooks.com and let us know what it was like to follow in the footsteps of Sergeant Kate and her team of trusty detectives. You can find out more about the local Crime Walks in Somerset by visiting Bridgwater Library or their Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/BridgwaterLibraryUK.

THE DETECTIVES
Kate is a feisty, young police detective, with a dynamic approach to her job. She is plucky and tenacious, but prone to being impetuous and headstrong, which often lands her in tight spots and does not exactly endear her to her crusty detective inspector.

In stark contrast to Kate, her detective partner, Hayden, is an overweight, untidy ex-public schoolboy, with a pompous, laid-back attitude, which drives her to distraction. But he is also highly intelligent, with a keen, analytical mind and a practical, reasoned approach to everything, which, with a prevailing wind, can sometimes act as a brake on his partner’s more impulsive actions.

THE SETTING
A patchwork of fields, peat moor and marshland, dotted with picturesque villages and criss-crossed by man-made irrigation ditches or rhynes, the Somerset Levels covers an area of about 160,000 acres between the Mendips and Quantock Hills, in the County of Somerset. Sparsely populated outside the local towns of Bridgwater, Glastonbury and Street and prone to flooding, it is a haven for wildlife. A wild, secret place with an atmospheric brooding stillness that creeps into the very soul; a place where the booming call of a bittern or the beating of an owl’s wings in the mist is bound to fire the imagination of any self-respecting crime novelist, whose thoughts will invariably turn to . . . murder.

THE AUTHOR
David Hodges is a former police superintendent with thirty years’ service. Since ‘turning to crime’, he has received critical media acclaim, including a welcome accolade from Inspector Morse’s creator, the late great, Colin Dexter, and he is now a prolific novelist with eleven published crime novels and an autobiography on his police career to his credit. His previous police experience has enabled him to provide a gritty realism to his thrillers and his Somerset Murder Series, featuring feisty female detective, Kate, and her partner, Hayden, has gone from strength to strength, attracting interest in the United States as well as in the UK.

JOY ELLIS ON THE FENLAND LOCATION OF HER BOOKS

The wonderful team at Culturefly – a collaborative website written by a group of not-so-average Joes and Janes for those who love all things creative and cultural – have posted a piece by our very own Joy Ellis on the Fenland location of her books.

For those of you who are yet to discover Joy Ellis and her DI Nikki Galena series, this feature provides some interesting context to the creation and inspiration behind the series and Joy’s main character: the Fenlands themselves! “I think it all came together one evening when we were walking our first two English Springer Spaniels, Max and Rowan, out from the village and onto the fen lanes. There was what could only be described as ‘a moment’, when the atmosphere of the location just stopped me in my tracks and filled me with wonder . . . Beautiful as it was, it held a kind of menace, and that was the pivotal moment when I realised that the main character in my new novel was going to be the Fenland itself.”

You can read the full article here: www.culturefly.co.uk/the-patient-man-author-joy-ellis-on-the-fenland-location-of-her-books/.

Joy Ellis is one of six authors on the British Book of the Year’s Crime & Thriller shortlist, with the award winner announced on Thursday 13 May, 2021. Good luck to everyone involved in tonight’s award ceremony!

FEATURE FRIDAY: DAVID HODGES

We’re so excited to kick-start a brand-new series of blog posts called ‘Feature Friday’, starring some of our very own Joffe Books authors! This feature is designed to allow authors to have free rein to discuss a topic of their choice to share with our readers.

This week we’re delighted to have David Hodges in the spotlight for our first Feature Friday post. Without further ado, over to you, David!

TO PLAN OR NOT TO PLAN – THAT IS THE QUESTION

I am often asked by people, ‘How do you plan your crime novels?’ The answer I give them is, ‘I don’t.’

To plan or not to plan is a knotty question in the fiction writing world. Some writers spend hours, days – maybe even weeks – planning each stage of their novels down to the finest detail, specifying exactly what is going to happen in each chapter right down to the end. But that approach does not work for me. I have certainly tried – especially in the early stages of my writing career – but I found it a boring, laborious task that simply tied everything down so tightly that it completely ruined my enjoyment of writing.

That is not to say that I don’t have a plan at all – which may sound a little contradictory – but what I mean is, I have an idea in my head as to where my novel is going, which has invariably been inspired by something I have seen or heard in everyday life. It could be a creepy, derelict house I am driving past one night, when I see a light on in one of the windows where there shouldn’t be, or an off-the-cuff remark from someone who suggests in a jocular way that the local mortician could be sending more people on their way himself to make his business more viable. If what I’ve seen or heard strikes a chord, it will set me thinking, ‘What if?’ From that point on, the story will develop in my mind and I will spend a fair bit of time jotting down ideas on an A4 pad, until the plot emerges. At that stage, I begin writing and the story carries me forward almost of its own volition. At times I may have to change or amend things as new options occur to me. That is the downside of this kind of approach, and it requires a totally focused mind to remember what effect any changes might have on what has been written before. But the central theme remains locked in my brain and I build the twists and turns around this. In short, I know where the story is going and roughly how it will end, and the beauty of it all is that I have a ball writing it, which for me is the main thing.

So, should writers plan their work? I have to say that is up to the individual writer. If planning works for them, then great, but if it doesn’t, as long as the storyline is consistent and holds the reader, then what does it matter? The important thing with a crime thriller is to remember that it is intended to thrill. However much planning goes into it, if it doesn’t do that, then it becomes a damp squib. Maybe I am out of sync with the views of many of the writing schools, but one size can never fit all in a creative industry and, if my style or approach makes me a maverick, then that is what I am, and as long as people keep reading my novels, I will keep writing them.
