CHRISTOPHER NEWMAN

Christopher Newman was born in San Francisco, California, and raised in the Santa Clara Valley before its thousands of acres of apricots, cherries and prunes were turned to Silicon. He holds a BA in Literature from the University of California at Santa Cruz — writing the first draft of Manana Man, his third-published novel, during his third year — and an MFA in Creative Writing from San Diego State.

In his late teens, he travelled solo across the Asian subcontinent to Singapore, before working aboard a tanker plying trade between the Persian Gulf and ports around the Pacific rim.

At 27, he moved to New York City, working as a carpenter in Manhattan before his first Joe Dante novel, Midtown South, was published in 1985 to considerable commercial success. Eight more Joe Dante novels followed, all making various national best seller lists. Midtown North, published in 1991, was nominated for an Edgar Allan Poe Award by the Mystery Writers of America.

Newman is also the author of standalone suspense thrillers, including New York Times Notable Book of the Year Chain of Command, an unfinished novel by best-selling author William Cauntiz, which he completed at the estate’s request. He writes dark humored slice of life novels under the pen name Pete O’Brien.
