THE STORY BEHIND ‘GIRL WITH SECRETS’ A HEARTBREAKING WW2 HISTORICAL SAGA BY CAROL RIVERS

I am a history buff. The inspiration for my books is simply to preserve social history in an attractive sense for readers. There are  always surprises in writing. For instance, my Nan’s old house still survives in Chapel House Street on the Isle of Dogs amidst all those awesome new skyscrapers (and it survived the Blitz too!).  Who wouldn’t want to write about such adventure!

Although we now live in Dorset, my family are East End evacuees and party lovers. They all have beautiful voices and make the  most of a typical Cockney “knees up” reunion. That’s why I like to write about family get-togethers and all the entertainment they provide.

Girl With Secrets came from an idea that sprung from my parents’ recollections. One day during the Blitz, their house was demolished by a doodlebug. My grandfather and mother hid under the dining table - and survived! They were later evacuated to  Oxford and, like Daisy, had quite a time of adjusting to the peace of the countryside.

My husband Chris is an artist and paints my characters as I describe them. Over my writing years he has become a bit like an unpaid police profiler! He’s very  imaginative and we often discuss the profiles in depth so that I have a good idea of who it is I’m  writing about before I plot. Great fun.

I hope my readers are totally satisfied by the end of the book. The characters must grow (for good or bad depending on the character!) and I hope there are always surprises along the way, plus a  lasting sigh of satisfaction at the conclusion.
